How a Restricted-Access Catacombs Tour Works
Book online, meet your guide at Denfert-Rochereau, go down together.
Choose Your Group Size
Tours run from six guests (LivTours) to 15 (City Wonders), at $156 to $280 per person as of October 2026. Smaller groups cost more and get more time in the restricted rooms.
Meet at Denfert-Rochereau
Guides meet near the Catacombs entrance on Place Denfert-Rochereau. Bring only a small bag (under 40 x 30 x 20 cm); there is no cloakroom.
Skip the Queue, Go Down
Your guide takes the group through the timed entrance, down 131 steps and along the ossuary, opening gated rooms off the public route on the way.
Come Up Elsewhere
The route is one-way. You climb 112 steps and exit on avenue René-Coty, about 700 metres from where you went in.

Underground Paris: What You Can Legally See and How
The restricted rooms of the Catacombs, the crypt under Notre-Dame's square and the sewers museum.

Paris sits on roughly 300 km of old limestone quarries, and almost all of it is off-limits: entering the network outside the museum has been illegal since 1955. Three places let you go underground legally. The Catacombs ossuary, where small-group tours open rooms beside the 1.5 km public route. The archaeological crypt under the square in front of Notre-Dame. And the sewers museum by the Pont de l’Alma.
If you want the gated rooms, book LivTours’ small-group tour above: six guests at most, skip-the-line entry, an expert guide, 4.9/5 from 204 reviews, from $235 as of October 2026, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
What “restricted areas” means
Inside the Catacombs, some side galleries and chambers are gated off from the public route. Licensed tour operators have access to them with a guide. You are still inside the museum, not in the illegal quarries, but the rooms are quieter and the guide explains what the audio guide skims: the quarry workings, the inspectors who shored up the tunnels and the way the bones were arranged. Reviewers mention “two secret places” on the LivTours tour; the tour guy’s version names two restricted chambers, the “Barrel of Passion” in the Crypt of Passion and the lower Catacombs.

Three more are worth knowing. Walks France-Spain’s special-access tour (from $156, 4.7/5 from 1,025 reviews) has the longest record and caps groups at 14, or six on some afternoon start times. The tour guy’s version (from $201, 4.8/5 from 84 reviews) is the one that goes to the lower Catacombs. City Wonders’ tour (from $280, 4.7/5 from 408 reviews) runs groups of up to 15 or a semi-private option of seven. The skip-the-line guide goes through all of them.
The archaeological crypt under Notre-Dame
Under the square in front of Notre-Dame, the Crypte archéologique de l’île de la Cité shows remains found in digs between 1965 and 1972 and opened as a museum in 1980: walls and foundations from the Roman town to the medieval island, two thousand years of the Île de la Cité in one basement. It belongs to Paris Musées, like the Catacombs. Entry is €11, €9 reduced and free under 18, Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 (last tickets 17:30), at 7 place Jean-Paul II. A walking tour of Notre-Dame’s exterior with an optional crypt ticket (from $61 as of October 2026, 4.6/5 from 790 reviews) is in the comparison above.
The sewers museum
The Musée des égouts de Paris takes you into a working section of the sewer network under the Left Bank, with the history of the tunnels and the work of the égoutiers who maintain them. It is one of the few underground sites in Paris with step-free access. Entry is €9, €7 reduced and free under 18, Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:00; it closes on 1 May, 25 December and for the first 15 days of January. The entrance is by the Pont de l’Alma, place Habib-Bourguiba, in the 7th. Tickets are sold on the museum’s own ticketing site; GetYourGuide does not sell it, so there is nothing to book here.
Which underground visit is for you
For bones and atmosphere, the Catacombs, with the standard ticket or a small-group tour if you want the gated rooms. For Roman and medieval Paris, the crypt, an easy hour you can pair with Notre-Dame. For engineering and a step-free visit, the sewers. And for the cemetery where Paris buried its dead after the ossuary filled, take a Père Lachaise Cemetery tour or, after dark, a Paris ghost tour.

What Small-Group Catacombs Tour Guests Say
"Maria was the perfect guide for this tour. She is so passionate about the catacombs and we had a very informative tour. The 2 secret places were a bonus and the pace was perfect. As she said “I love bones” and there were certainly enough to keep you interested throughout the whole tour."
"Remi was amazing. getting to see some areas that would otherwise not be available without the tour was amazing. I highly recommend."
"Our tour guide had extensive historical knowledge the Catacombs and welcomed questions. The guide's English was very easy to understand. It was a fascinating and macabre adventure, and fun to get to go into some of the spaces not open to people on self-guided tours. The tunnels are very well-ventilated with fresh air. This tour descends several stories down into the ground via a spiral staircase. Be sure you a fit enough to climb back out! The reward is the gift shop."
"Our guide, Melvin, had excellent knowledge and a great sense of humor, which made our tour truly interesting. Thank you."
"Zac our tour guide was absolutely amazing! Extremely knowledgeable and funny throughout the entire tour"

Underground Paris Tours: Frequently Asked Questions
Restricted areas, the crypt and the sewers. Checked in October 2026.
Only with a licensed guide inside the museum. The public route is 1.5 km of a quarry network of roughly 300 km, and entering the rest has been illegal since 1955; a police unit patrols it. Restricted-access tours open gated rooms beside the public route, which is the only legal way past it.
Side galleries and chambers inside the Catacombs that are closed to standard visitors. Operators with access open them on guided tours: LivTours mentions restricted areas on its six-guest tour, and the tour guy's version names two restricted chambers, the 'Barrel of Passion' in the Crypt of Passion and the lower Catacombs.
As of October 2026, $156 to $280 per person through GetYourGuide: ExperienceFirst and Walks France-Spain from $156, the tour guy from $201, Memories France from $213, LivTours from $235 and City Wonders from $280. All include entry and skip the ticket queue.
For the smallest group, LivTours (six guests at most, 4.9/5 from 204 reviews). For the best rating on a big review base, Memories France's restricted access tour (seven or fewer, 4.9/5 from 533 reviews). For the lowest price, ExperienceFirst's skip-the-line tour (from $156, 4.8/5 from 422 reviews).
Longer than the 45 minutes to an hour most people spend on the standard ticket, because the group stops in the extra rooms and the guide talks through the history. Each listing gives its exact length. Allow extra time for the walk back from the exit, which is about 700 metres from the entrance.
For an hour, yes, if you like engineering and history: it takes you into a working section of the network under the Left Bank. It is cheap (€9, free under 18) and, unlike the Catacombs, accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. GetYourGuide does not sell it; tickets are on the museum's own site.
Yes, at the Musée des égouts de Paris by the Pont de l'Alma, Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:00). It closes on 1 May, 25 December and the first 15 days of January. Guided visits are offered to groups by request.
The Crypte archéologique de l'île de la Cité, under the square in front of the cathedral. It shows remains found in digs from 1965 to 1972, from the Roman town to the medieval island, and has been a museum since 1980. Entry is €11, €9 reduced, free under 18, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00.
Because the city was built from its own ground. For centuries, limestone for buildings was quarried from under what is now the south of Paris, leaving hundreds of kilometres of galleries. When they began to collapse in the late 18th century, the city set up an inspectorate to shore them up, and part of the network became the ossuary we now call the Catacombs.
The sewers museum and the crypt are easy with children and free for under-18s. The Catacombs admit children, free under 8, but under-14s must be with an adult, strollers are not allowed and there are 243 steps. Check each tour's listing for minimum ages before booking a restricted-access tour.
